William MacGregor Primary School is a popular one form entry school which has been serving the local community and beyond for over 130 Years. We have 7 classes from Reception through to Year 6 and are proud of the daily successes of each and every one of our pupils.
Here at William MacGregor Primary School staff, children and governors work hard to achieve, are inspired by each other and other people further afield and have aspirations for their short and long-term futures. Our vision, reviewed in Autumn 2018, encompasses this ethos.
At William MacGregor our greatest focus is the children’s learning behaviours. Each week we celebrate these in our achievement assemblies - PERFECT learners. Positive attitude, Editing to improve, Resilience, Finding my own way, Enquiry, Challenge and Teamwork. These key life skills will ensure success in any future employment or career path chosen by our children.
“We have a firm commitment to ensuring that all pupils are well prepared, both socially and academically, for their future lives as citizens of modern Britain.” Ofsted January 2018
We are a school community with high expectations; our children, staff, parents and governors strive to achieve the very best through us all working hard together.
Our creative approach to the curriculum encompasses several subjects across a rolling programme of topics that allows for key skills to be developed as well as developing and mastering knowledge. The curriculum promotes creativity and supports children’s enquiring minds. It also ensures that pupils learn in a variety of ways through whole class teaching, outdoor learning and through an approach called ‘Learning Without Lessons’ where learning is taught by making conscious connections and through continuous provision.
In our recent review of our Vision, all of the community talked about inspiring futures and how we must inspire our children to have ambition and to strive for these goals. Academic success is a key ingredient to give our children choices, but beyond that, we create experiences for the children that will ignite their passion for what they want to achieve in their futures. We achieve this through visits, visitors, curriculum enrichment days, virtual reality and focus weeks enabling children to experience the world they live in through exciting and memorable ways.
“We have developed a curriculum that engages pupils’ interests and provides them with visits and experiences that broaden their understanding of the world around them.” Ofsted January 2018
Physical and mental wellbeing are two essential ingredients to any success in life and our children must feel safe, happy and healthy in order to achieve. Mr Massam, our PE coach, provides opportunities at lunchtime so all children take part in intra competitions and also our children are involved in all local inter competitions.
Every day children take part in the ‘MacGregor Mile’; during these 15 minutes the children build on their fitness to complete as many laps of a track as they can. The progress over the year is staggering.
Healthy eating is an important aspect of our school life; children understand the importance of drinking and eating foods with as little sugar content as possible. At William MacGregor we ask that children only eat fruit at break time and drink water throughout the day.
Mental Health can pose such a barrier in life and we are very fortunate to have Barry Pope work with us all every Tuesday. Barry is a clinical psychotherapist and very highly regarded in his field. He works with children, parents and staff to ensure any problems we may be encountering are resolved at the earliest opportunity. We also have Boo, our school dog; she provides an instant calming influence to us all.
Our partnerships with parents are essential and hugely successful; senior leaders are on the gate every morning to talk to parents and build strong relationships. All staff are on the playground at the end of the day for parents to talk to if needed. Communication is so important and we ensure our parents are fully informed with a weekly newsletter, our website calendar and latest news, our text and email service and our very own school App.
Parents play a key role in their child’s education supporting learning experiences at home; they read at least five times a week with their child fostering a love for reading, practice times tables with our TT Rockstars App and join in with half-termly projects linked to their children’s learning in the classroom. We are extremely grateful that our parents are so interested in their child’s learning and play such a key role.
"The school focuses on the whole child and develops children in all areas. There are fantastic opportunities offered in the variety of clubs, theme days, supporting charities, educational visits and involvement in the local community." Parent January 2018
